講演概要
Many approaches in physics and chemistry rely on treating some degrees of freedom as effectively classical, while others are treated as quantum. Two common examples include the classical measurement signal and conditional quantum state in continuous measurement theory, and the slow-moving classical nuclei and quantum electrons in molecular dynamics. However, understanding whether these hybrid systems can satisfy basic thermodynamic properties such as detailed balance and the second law is much less well understood. In this talk I show that consistent hybrid dynamics satisfying these properties can in fact be constructed, providing a method of studying non-equilibrium thermodynamics in a range of systems involving both effectively classical and quantum degrees of freedom. To illustrate the dynamics and its applications, this talk will focus on two basic models. The first is an analytically solvable model of a quantum two-level system coupled to an overdamped classical degree of freedom, which can be used to study the heat flow and entropy production in a toy model of a quantum measurement. The second is a model of a classical-quantum oscillator system subject to friction, which demonstrates thermalisation in the adiabatic basis, a desirable property for mixed classical-quantum simulation of molecules.
