Dirac-like physics emulated in photonic platforms
This talk will discuss examples of photonic systems with a massive Dirac-like spectrum that enable observation of counterparts for topological boundary modes in optics. These include a gradient catastrophe of slowly-varying wavepackets at the topological domain walls in nonlinear photonic valley-Hall insulators and trapped eigenstates in nanostructured metasurfaces. In particular, adiabatic mass profiles in structured photonic materials give rise to electromagnetic modes endowed with some unique characteristics, such as spin-dependent radiative losses and radiation profiles analogous to various atomic orbitals.
