Abstract
Classicality of light has been the subject of an ongoing debate at least since Einstein's work on photoelectric effect and the discovery of wave-particle duality. The distinction between classical and quantum light remains especially unclear in the case of time evolution, which in both cases is governed by the same set of four Maxwell's equations. In this seminar, we will investigate the classicality of so-called symplectic time evolution, which corresponds to operations accessible in a modern quantum optical laboratory, most notably Gaussian operations. We will derive precise conditions for the classicality of such evolution and demonstrate their sensibility. To obtain our results, we will employ the recent mesoscopic formalism of the reduced state of the field, which we will introduce and discuss in detail.
