Abstract
The detection of more and more gravitational-wave sources was made possible by the improved sensitivity of newer generations of interferometric detectors (LIGO and Virgo). With the ongoing upgrades, we plan to eliminate most (if not all) classical noise contributions (thermal, seismic, mechanical) from the sensitivity curves of both detectors, thus approaching their “quantum limit”. This seminar offers a non-technical presentation of the interferometer design, sensitivity curve, and detection results, aimed at a general audience.
