Abstract
This talk will present our recent work on the study of super- and sub-radiance in an elongated cloud of laser cooled atoms excited on an optical transition. This pencil-shape geometry bears some similarities with cavity quantum electrodynamics: here the cavity mode is replaced by the diffraction (super-radiant) mode of the elongated cloud. We observe superradiant pulses of light after population inversion, and we characterize the properties of their spatial emission. We confirm a scenario of superradiance emission in extended samples predicted by Carmichael around 2000. We also measure the statistics of the emitted light during the pulses an observe the transition from independent to phase locked emitters. Finally, we follow a recent proposal to write a spin wave with a wavevector larger than the one of the transition, leading to controlled subradiance.
