講演概要
Carbon is the most versatile of elements, allowing tailored nanostructures with properties that cannot be matched in other materials. I will present two experiments that use quantum properties of different carbon nanomaterials for sensitive measurements.
The first experiment measures mechanical vibrations in individual carbon nanotubes. These vibrate like tiny guitar strings, and because they are so small and compliant, they are among the most delicate force sensors known. They are so sensitive that they are affected by the tunnelling of individual electrons on and off the nanotube. I will describe how we make and measure these tiny devices, how we study the effects of electrical transport on their motion, and how they may ultimately be useful in advanced force-sensing microscopes.
The second experiment investigates the potential of endohedral fullerene molecules for use in a new kind of miniature clock. These molecules contain an isolated atom (usually nitrogen, in our experiments) whose spin-resonance transitions are very sharp and can be used as a frequency reference. I will describe our measurements of the clock transition and the potential of this material to be technologically useful.
