Abstract
I will present our recent efforts to transition superconducting quantum processors from laboratory prototypes to medium-scale systems with maximally efficient use of resources. The talk will cover atomic-scale materials characterization, experimental characterization of a 16-qubit processor, crosstalk modelling, and large scale off-chip multiplexing for high-fidelity measurements. I will also discuss approaches for achieving all-to-all connectivity, quantum memories and long-range coupling, as well as a cooling algorithm designed to enhance system performance.
Bio: Dr. Mustafa Bakr is an award-winning Quantum Technology Fellow and Lecturer in Physics at the University of Oxford. He leads pioneering work on scaling superconducting quantum processors, tackling challenges across the full hardware stack—from materials engineering and coherence optimisation to crosstalk suppression, I/O multiplexing, and quantum device packaging. He led the development of the UK’s first 100-qubit superconducting processor and has secured over £1.6 million in competitive research funding. Dr. Bakr’s contributions have been recognised with multiple honours, including Innovator of the Year (2019), the 2022 UKRI Rising Star in Quantum Science award, and the Oxford Award for Excellence (2023, 2024) alongside the MPLS Outstanding Research Supervision Award (2025). He holds 10 patents and has authored 43+ publications.
